Webinar: Decarbonising Ports – The Route to Net Zero

Climate change is arguably the most pressing global issue of our time, and it is finally being taken seriously by governments around the world. The UK is now legally committed to reach ‘Net Zero’ by 2050 and the ports sector will have to play a significant role in reaching that target.

The Maritime 2050 Strategy and Clean Maritime Plan have raised the bar in terms of ambition, but there are numerous legal, regulatory, financial and logistical issues to work through and a broad range of measures will be needed.

Electrification of port activities; the use of hydrogen for multiple applications; electric/hybrid/hydrogen/biofuel-run vessels; renewable energy generation and use are all likely to play key roles in a multi-faceted approach.

On Thursday 29 April, BDB Pitmans, along with an expert panel of speakers will explore some of the challenges and opportunities faced by ports and port users in implementing the measures needed to decarbonise by 2050.

Key themes that will be discussed will include:

  • Electrification of port related activities;
  • Shoreside power;
  • Fuel switch for maritime transport & electric / hybrid / hydrogen vessels;
  • Energy generation and use (PV, wind turbines, LEDs); and
  • Carbon capture & storage.

The panel will include Leanna Lakes from Red Funnel, Caroline Price from Royal Haskoning DHV, Mark Simmonds from British Ports Association (BPA), Jerry Clarke from Portsmouth Port, Andy Vickers from Vattenfall Network Solutions with Richard Marsh, Partner at BDB Pitmans chairing the session.

The session will finish up with the opportunity for Q&A with the speakers. If you would like to submit questions for consideration in advance, please click here.
