Entrepreneurs
Where would the world be without entrepreneurs?
What would you say are the most important qualities for a brand?

Obviously, each brand sets its own standards and expectations. But, we are hopefully well-positioned to support brands who share our belief that we must act now to save our planet. We hope to support proactive brands, who have the power to influence change. We are all in this together…and only together can we turn things around in time for humanity to survive…at least in a world similar to what we [have] all enjoyed until now.

What motivates you?

Recognizing both the opportunity and the urgency of the moment fill me with hope and excitement. I am motivated every day to make a difference, whether it is locally or globally. As Barack Obama once said, “We must embrace the fierce urgency of now” and I could not agree more.

What motivates you?

Creation and growth. I co-founded Simply Jet [just over] six years ago. Since then we have evolved from a three-person company generating $1 million revenue to a company of 35 generating $30 million in revenue. We aim to hit $100 million in revenue within three years’ time, most likely with a team of around 100 people based in international offices.

How have the cultural and social changes of the last two years impacted how you run your business?

We now offer employees a four day working week, with scope to cut down to two or three. With our talent drawn from the digital nomad generation we pride ourselves on being able to provide a balance of remote and face-to-face working.

What would you say are the most important qualities for a good entrepreneur?

Determination, drive, focus, positivity, flexibility, an appetite for risk, a teaspoon of dry humour, and a big spoonful of courage, good people skills and commercial skills all help. Not everything is smooth sailing when you start a business, but tough times help you navigate your way through and strengthen your ability to achieve success.

What tips do you have for building a great team?

A great team is made up of different types of people – it is important to have a mix of skill sets and temperaments. Most important is employing people who believe in what your business stands for and who are constantly striving to become better at what they do.

Have the cultural and social changes of the last two years impacted how you position your brand?

At Tony’s Chocolonely we exist to make all chocolate 100% slave free. Not just our chocolate but all chocolate worldwide. This has been our mission since we were founded in 2005 and remains so today.

What project are you working on which excite you right now?

We are most excited to create even more positive impact in West Africa through Tony’s Open Chain. This is our open source platform that enables other cocoa-buying companies to adopt our sourcing principles and tackle the root cause of illegal labour in the supply chain – poverty. Each mission ally that joins us means even more cocoa being sourced in a more responsible way from West Africa, and more farmers getting out of poverty.

What would you say are the most important qualities for a brand?

Transparency and authenticity.

Have the cultural and social changes of the last two years impacted how you position your brand?

Yes, we traditionally employed everyone from within 30 miles of our local office in Michigan; however the cultural change enabled us to employ people all over the country and we now have colleagues from California, Pennsylvania, Florida and Michigan – 35% of our employees are what we call ‘out of state’. Our brand became a national employer, but we were careful to remain agile. By having a flexible workplace environment, we have a smaller environmental foot print enabling us to make ESG a core part of our brand going forward.

What motivates you?

So many things! Of course, climate change and the mass extinctions we are seeing . But, at the same time, we are inspired by the young people rising to the occasion and the remarkable scientific breakthroughs that fill us with hope for the future. As people become aware, and engaged, we can make a difference. Now is the time.

We are very involved with healthcare, technology and professional service brands and we have been excited by several healthcare breakthroughs including CAR-T cell therapy and COVID RNA vaccines – both of which were developed by our clients.
