Next month, we will be welcoming  interns from the 10,000 Black Interns and the 10,000 Able Interns programmes, which offer paid work experience, training, mentoring, and development opportunities for a wide range of underrepresented groups across the UK. Ahead of the interns joining the firm, we interviewed Opeyemi Abayomi who initially joined BDB Pitmans through the programme in 2023, and who stayed on at the firm as the HR Administrator. She provides insightful advise to our new cohort of interns and describes her time at BDB Pitmans.

You joined BDB Pitmans after the 2023 Intern programme. How would you describe your first year at the firm?

Since I joined in 2023, it has been an incredible learning experience for me. From the very beginning, I have had the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally while contributing my thoughts and skills to various team projects. The team I have been working with has been super supportive and always willing to answer questions that I have and share their knowledge. The kind of encouragement I have received from my team and several other people I work with across the firm has played a crucial role in my development, enabling me to tackle challenges with confidence.

What is your proudest professional achievement since joining BDB Pitmans?

My proudest achievement is successfully transitioning into the HR administrator role. This role presented a significant challenge, with numerous systems and processes that I needed to learn quickly. I am particularly proud of my ability to adapt and understand these complex processes.

If you were to describe our company culture in three words, what would they be?

Supportive, collaborative, and inclusive: BDB Pitmans has very supportive people; there is a show of teamwork and collective success, and the firm also fosters an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and can contribute freely.

Do you have any advice for this year’s interns?

Be proactive. It is important for you to not wait for tasks to be assigned to you. If you find out about any ongoing project, ask about how you can help. Your contributions will always help the team. You should also define what you want to achieve during your internship; it will provide clarity on areas to focus on and develop throughout the programme.

Ask Questions: One thing I realised as well is the internships are more of a learning experience than any show of skills, and you are expected to have queries. Whether you need clarity on a subject matter or need help to understand your tasks better, don’t be shy to ask questions.
