It is a pleasure to welcome you to the latest issue of Individual Matters.

As we go to press most parts of the UK and many countries worldwide are again in, or re-entering, periods of more intense restrictions. There will doubtless be further twists and turns ahead but, locked down or not, the events and changes of ‘normal life’, and the pressures and opportunities they offer, will not go into a state of suspended animation.

Individuals still need to plan for the best structures to hold their assets in their lifetime, and for who will inherit from them. Business owners still need to plan as best they can for the future of their businesses. We all need to plan for the unlikely but unwelcome possibility of a temporary or permanent loss of health and mental capacity. Travel may be restricted, but individuals whose assets or personal lives have an international angle still need to be able to make the practical and taxation aspects of their arrangements dovetail satisfactorily.

The implications of COVID-19 are inevitably capturing centre stage, but if other issues are postponed they are likely to become more, not less, difficult. If there is anything we can do to give legal assistance or advice, do please get in touch.

Life has not stood still here at BDB Pitmans over these difficult months. The first lockdown was not the best time to be in the middle of a move (though it gave us real empathy for those of our clients in the same position!) but we have now completed the London office’s transfer to new and more environmentally-friendly offices at One Bartholomew Close, EC1; and the individuals department is delighted to introduce you to its four new partners.

As Individual Matters nears its 20th anniversary I particularly want to thank consultant Judith Morris, lead for the private client know-how team, for her work on this her last edition before she retires at Christmas after more than 20 years with the firm. She has edited Individual Matters throughout its life and we wish her a long and happy retirement.

I will close by wishing you, your families, and all you care about, well in these unprecedented and evolving times.
