BDB’s international ownership of UK property blog commenced in February 2014 in response to the Government announcement introducing a capital gains tax (CGT) charge on foreign owners of UK residential property. This was then the latest change impacting on overseas owners of UK residential property following the introduction of the annual tax on enveloped dwellings (ATED) and ATED-related CGT.
In the intervening four years the blog has been fuelled by those new rules and further developments affecting owners of UK residential property, such as the extension of the inheritance tax regime to include certain non-UK assets which derive their value from UK residential property.
With proposals for a register detailing ownership of UK property by overseas persons and the inclusion of gains on all UK real property within the scope of UK tax (as outlined in Helen Ratcliffe’s article) international owners of UK property will face further changes in the coming years.
Our blog will continue to cover property matters together with the impact of the recent tax changes affecting non doms, but we are now expanding the blog’s remit to include wider issues impacting on international individuals and families coming to the UK, leaving the UK, or having a UK aspect to their affairs. We will also be looking at areas such as the practical impact of the move towards global tax transparency, immigration, cross-border succession, matrimonial, trust law matters and tax compliance.
