Proposed probate fee rises provoke backlash

Ministers have announced plans to introduce a ‘banded’ structure for probate fees. The proposals have provoked backlash from critics as they insist that the revised reforms still amount to a ‘stealth tax’ on bereaved families.

It is also thought that charities are facing a significant loss in legacy income if the proposed reforms come into force.
