We are seeing an increase in support worldwide from employers who are offering bereavement leave for employees whose pet dies. Companies in both America and the United Kingdom are now offering anything from one day to three weeks of paid bereavement leave to grieve for the loss of a pet.
There is no legal obligation for employers to provide employees with bereavement leave, although this is usually provided at the employer’s discretion.
There is also no legal obligation for employers to provide additional leave for bereavement of a pet. That being so, this topic is becoming more frequently debated and employers may eventually feel pressured to make provisions in their employment contracts to cover pet bereavement if this concept gains momentum.
