Supreme Court rules in favour of bakery in ‘gay cake’ discrimination case

The Christian owners of a bakery in Belfast have won their appeal at the Supreme Court following a ‘gay cake’ row which has run on for years. The Ashers bakery refused to fulfil an order from the customer Gareth Lee who asked for a cake to be decorated with a pro-gay marriage slogan.

Lee sued the company for discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and political beliefs, however the bakery insisted its objection was to the message on the cake, rather than the customer, as they believe that the only form of marriage consistent with the Bible is between a man and a woman.

Nicholas Le Riche, partner in our employment team, comments on the case in City AM.
