Divorce rate at its lowest level since 1971
John Darnton Consultant
There were 90,871 divorces of opposite-sex couples 2018, a 10.6% decrease from previous years. The Office for National Statistics has claimed that this is the lowest divorce rate since 1971 and the first time since the 1970s that it has fallen below 100,000.
John Darnton, consultant in BDB Pitmans’ family and matrimonial team, comments on the reasoning behind this in an article for eprivateclient:
‘These latest figures may suggest that, whatever the legal process, couples may be more inclined to remain married, especially in times of political and economic uncertainty.’
