According to draft planning documents released by the Housing, Communities and Local Government department, local authorities will have an obligation to approve a series of wind and solar farms across rural areas.
Imposed by Housing Secretary Angela Rayner, the new legislation implies that any council or planning authority opposing a proposal will risk expensive legal appeals, with developers being favoured.
In an article for The Telegraph and MSN, partner and parliamentary agent Mustafa Latif-Aramesh highlights that the changes will make it harder for councils to reject renewable energy project developments. He states:
'Landscape impacts will still be considered in the round, but the changes will make it more difficult to turn down low-carbon infrastructure, helping us reinforce our energy resilience. Further changes are likely required given the scale of the task.'
