Why is London seen as the ‘divorce capital of the world’?

Some perceive London to be the divorce capital of the world. In a case where a Swiss national is currently in disagreement with her husband over which jurisdiction they should apply for divorce in, she asks whether London would be the best option for her.
John Darnton, consultant in our family law team, responds that the English courts deal with financial claims differently from courts of other countries which can make the advantages more apparent to one spouse, however advises that proof must be shown that the marriage had broken down due to specific reasons, rather than purely ‘irreconcilable differences’.
