The UK has left the EU

The UK ceased to be a member of the EU on 31 January 2020 but remains – under the terms Withdrawal Agreement reached between the UK and the EU – in a transition or implementation period until 31 December 2020. During this period, the UK continues to be treated as an EU Member State.

After that, however, the situation is less clear: the UK and the EU are currently negotiating the terms of the UK/EU future relationship. But the government’s position is that the UK is seeking – at most – a free trade agreement with the EU similar to that which the EU has with Canada, and not a closer relationship. That is almost certainly precipitate significant legal and regulatory changes in the UK, affecting everyone: from homeowners to small businesses, farmers to environmental bodies.
