Services

Ryan is a solicitor with over 10 years of experience acting for clients involved in commercial disputes, often involving multiple jurisdictions. He has acted for a wide range of clients, from high-net-worth individuals to publicly-listed companies.

Ryan has extensive experience of disputes involving alleged breaches of contract, negligence, shareholder claims, civil fraud, and breaches of directors’ duties. He is also a reputation management and defamation specialist, acting for both publishers and publishees on pre-publication issues, injunctions, and High Court defamation proceedings.

Ryan acts for clients in both High Court claims and arbitrations. His work also includes advising on settlement strategies and representing clients in mediations and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Ryan also advises clients on business risk and compliance issues, principally focused on anti-bribery and corruption issues, and has undertaken corporate investigations, including in relation to cyber fraud.

  • Acting for a biotech company in a breach of contract and intellectual property dispute, culminating in a favourable outcome at a mediation.
  • Musst Holdings v Astra Asset Management; Astra Asset Management v Musst Investments & Saleem Siddiqi [2021] EWHC 3432 (Ch): A High Court claim brought by a financial services firm for breaches of an introduction agreement and unjust enrichment. A separate claim was brought by a related party for defamation and malicious falsehood. The claims culminated in a 13-day trial, followed by a successful judgment in both claims.
  • A dispute between a mining company and a contractor concerning contractual interpretation and force majeure, leading to a favourable settlement and a new commercial contract.
  • A High Court claim brought against a financial services company, alleging breaches of contract, breaches of FCA regulations, procuring a breach of contract, causing loss by unlawful means and defamation. An application for summary judgment and strike out successfully disposed of all causes of action.
  • Vald. Nielsen Holding A/S, Newwatch Limited v Mr Victor Baldorino, Mr Richard Bennett, Mr Julian Mantell [2019] EWHC 1926 (Comm): A High Court claim brought by the seller of a telephony business against the directors, claiming breaches of fiduciary duties and fraudulent misrepresentation. The claim included allegations of fraud and evidence from 16 witnesses of fact and experts on both foreign law and valuation issues. The claim culminated in a 23-day trial, followed by a successful judgment in favour of the Claimant.
  • Acting for a Premiership football club in a banking dispute, ending in a negotiated outcome satisfying the client’s commercial objectives.
  • Quiet Moments Ltd, Re [2014] EWCA Civ 1536, [2013] EWHC 3806 (Ch): A tripartite joint venture dispute in the High Court regarding a £20 million property in Mayfair and a subsequent appeal to the Court of Appeal.
  • Khouj v Acropolis Capital Partners Ltd [2016] EWHC 2120 (Comm): A High Court claim by the administrator of a US$200 million estate concerning the ownership of documents and assets, including a summary judgment application and appeal to the Court of Appeal.
  • Idemitsu Kosan Co Ltd v Sumitomo Corp [2016] EWHC 1909 (Comm): A High Court claim in relation to alleged breaches of warranty, misrepresentation and limitation of liability in an SPA concerning a US$575 million acquisition, culminating in summary judgment.
  • BG Global Energy Limited & Others v Talisman Sinopec, Idemitsu Petroleum [2015] EWHC 110 (Comm): A tripartite High Court claim in relation to the allocation of operating expenditure of £105 million between oil fields in the North Sea.
  • Antrim Resources v Hummingbird LLC, Teekay Corporation & others: A tripartite High Court claim concerning alleged breaches of contract regarding the lease of a drilling vessel.
  • Acting for a listed company on an urgent injunction against an individual making defamatory posts on Twitter.
  • New Century Media Ltd v Makhlay [2013] EWHC 3556 (QB): A High Court claim by a PR company concerning repudiatory breach of contract, culminating in a default judgment, trial on quantum and a successful judgment.
