Should the format of televised election debates be changed?

It has been argued that televised election debates are a waste of time. Many viewers have claimed that often, they reveal little that they didn’t already know, with pressure rarely being applied to the election candidates.

In an article for City AM, Stuart Thomson, head of public affairs at BDB Pitmans, discusses why there is a need for a different format, commenting:

‘These debates have come to represent everything that is wrong with current political debate — politicians sticking obsessively to a script, talking too long, and spouting their own version of the truth without proper challenge.’
